Professor P.

As I walked into his office, he had glass bottles on a bookshelf with new age furniture and a big mac on his desk. I immediately loved his office, it had piles of artwork and foreign magazines like Velvet scattered about the room. Beautiful organized chaos. "This is exactly what my office would look like" I thought.
I met with this professor because like so many other students at this university, I didn't get into the program I wanted to. (Yes you got into the university, but can you get into a program?..there's the rub). I'm slightly ashamed to admit that I've failed at something I put so much effort into. However, I think it has helped in opening my eyes to new possibilities and making me want and work for my dreams that much more.
He had a record player. A real, working record player in his office. As he turned on some lively Frank Sinatra tunes, I was thinking, "How are you so cool" ? ha
We talked about my portfolio, about things that I could improve on such as composition and innovation. When I started asking him about opportunities in the graphic design program, thats when the excitement took effect. He told me that its a top design program, and that they cover all the bases in design. I asked him about internship opportunities, and he told me they have several sources in New York that the top students can earn. " They are recommended, they don't volunteer" he emphasized with a grin.
He showed me some of the work the juniors did in the program last year. They had designed a magazine cover for a company. As I was looking at their work I couldn't help smiling..."gah! this is what I want to do" I felt like yelling at him. I just want to create.
This interview made me want to achieve my goals that much more. I'm in a sense burning. I have plans of eventually designing, interning,and submitting my portfolio for time # dos.

  1. I love this post. I felt the same way when I was interviewed for Leatherwood. They were showing me books and proofs and what I would need to do and I felt that same way--"Gah! This is what I want to do!" I love that sentiment. So true. I don't know if they could see that excitement of my face or not, but I doubt it was containable even though I was trying to be professional.

    The great thing? Sometimes those dreams really do come true.
